The House of Representatives has rejected a bill seeking to amend the 1999 Constitution to introduce a single six-year term for the President, State Governors, and Local Government Chairpersons, Daily Nigeria Newspaper reportedly reports.
Sponsored by Rep. Ikenga Ugochinyere (PDP-Imo) and 33 other lawmakers, the bill also proposed legal backing for the rotational presidency between the North and South every six years, zonal rotation of governorship seats, and conducting all elections on the same day.
It argued that these changes would promote inclusive governance and reduce costs associated with periodic elections. However, during plenary, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas put the bill to a voice vote, and the majority of lawmakers opposed it.
