The Sokoto state Chapter of Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) has celebrated the 2021 World Veterinary Day, which usually comes every last Saturday of every April.

World Veterinary Day is a day set aside by the World Veterinary Association to celebrate the contributions of Veterinarians across the globe.

Since the year 2000, the day has been routinely celebrated on the last Saturday of every April.

The theme of this year’s celebration, according to a Press statement by the Chairman and Secretary General of NVMA Sokoto chapter, Dr. Mubarak M. Bello and Dr. Attahiru Ahmad R. in sokoto on Saturday, is”Veterinarian response to the COVID – 19 crisis”.t

The statement partly said:

“Despite the global outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic, Veterinarians, however, across the globe have been in the forefront of efforts to contain the ravaging economic and public health impact of the pandemic.

“In Sokoto state, the veterinary community under the aegis of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) has risen to the demand of the occasion by ensuring that abattoirs, slaughter slabs, live bird markets, veterinary clinics were decontaminated and supplied with essential items of hand washing and sanitation.

“NVMA Sokoto state has also been in the forefront of public awareness campaigns against the disease through the various media outlets across the state. Also taking into cognisance of the economic impact of the pandemic, the Association have pushed for and ensured the supply of animal drugs, animal feeds, vaccines and other essential veterinary services with direct economic links have not been hindered especially during the lockdown periods.”

The Association also commended the Sokoto state government, its healthcare professionals, and all other stakeholders at the front lines for the efforts being put to curb the spread of disease in the state, while also urging its citizen to compliment governments effort by submitting themselves for vaccination against COVID – 19.
