Sokoto state chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, has declared total boycott of all activities in relation to the state’s football team, Sokoto United Football Club.

According to a statement co-signed by the Chairperson and the Secretary of the Sokoto state chapter of the association, Kabiru Gobirawa and Usman Zubairu, the decision was reached after an emergency congress of the association held Sunday.

According to the statement:

“The unanimous decision was taken following unwarranted harassment and molestation of members of the association at the Giginya Memorial Stadium Sokoto.

“It could be recalled that on Saturday 27 Feb 2021, our members were molested by security personnel at the stadium, one of us even had his clothes torn, when Sokoto United played host to Green Berets FC.

“Similarly on the 27 March 2021, members of the association were denied access to cover the match between Sokoto United with Oyah Sports International FC.

“All enteritis to the Stadium Manager to allow our members entry to the Stadium and carry out their duties fell on dear ears, only to allowed his friends and ally entry into the stadium.

“The association however, call on head of security agencies in the state, ministry for youth and sports development to sensitize their personnel on media relationship”, the statement added.

Meanwhile, all efforts to speak to the club’s management were abortive as the official contacted by our reporter declined to comment on the issue stating that he had to be given the authority to speak before he could say anything on the matter.
