Nigeria’s Flying Eagles suffered a 2-0 defeat against Brazil in their final Group D match of the 2023 FIFA Under-20 World Cup at the Estadio Único Diego Armando Maradona, La Plata, in Argentina.

Coach Ladan Bosso made changes to the starting lineup, resting Benjamin Fredrick and introducing Austin Njoku, as the right back for the first time in the tournament.

Jude Sunday’s acrobatic shot from an Umeh Emmanuel cross hit the crossbar early in the game.

Brazil’s Savio attempted to break the deadlock, but his shot narrowly missed the target. Nigeria’s Samson Lawal also had a chance, but his shot was collected by the Brazilian goalkeeper.

Then, in the 43rd minute, Brazil took the lead through Jean Pedroso’s header from a corner kick.

Just before halftime, Marquinhos extended Brazil’s lead with a low finish that slipped through the legs of Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Kingsley Aniagboso.

In the second half, Nigeria’s Abel Ogwuche received a yellow card as Brazil continued to dominate, with Aniagboso making crucial saves to keep the scoreline respectable.

Despite Nigeria’s efforts, they were unable to find a consolation goal, and Brazil secured the victory.

Although the Nigerian U20 team earned previous victories against the Dominican Republic and Italy, they finished in third place in the group with the loss.

This happened because Italy claimed the second spot with a 3-0 win over the Dominican Republic to skip over Nigeria by goal difference, while Brazil secured the top position in superior goal numbers as well.
